Hip replacement surgery

Hip replacement surgery is a procedure in which a painful hip is removed and replaced with an artificial joint. Hip replacement is usually performed when other treatment options fail to provide adequate pain relief. The aim of surgery is to relieve a painful hip joint and make walking easier.

Do I need hip replacement surgery?

These are some signs you may need surgery:

  • Your pain persists over a long time
  • You find it difficult to move around
  • Your hip aches during and after exercise
  • Medication is not offering adequate pain relief
  • The pain prevents you from sleeping
  • Your hip is swollen or stiff
  • You have difficulty getting in and out of chairs
  • You have difficulty walking up the stairs

Minimally invasive hip replacement surgery

While most hip replacement surgeries are performed using the standard technique, in recent years, some doctors have been using a minimally-invasive technique. Dr Salie uses a minimally-invasive approach, which uses smaller incisions. The smaller cuts lessen blood loss, ease pain following surgery, shorten hospital stays, reduce scar appearance, and speed up healing.

Recovery After Hip Replacement Surgery

After surgery, you will stay in the hospital for a few days and may have to lay in bed with a special cushion between your legs to keep the new joint in place. Physical therapy generally starts the day after surgery. A few days after physical therapy, you can begin walking with crutches, a walker, or a cane. You will continue with physical therapy for weeks to months after the surgery.

If you are experiencing any ongoing pain or discomfort in the hip area, contact Dr Salie. He will assess you and provide treatment options that will best suit your condition and needs.
